The Fairy Tale Model is a comprehensive phase model of trauma-informed treatment. This research-supported model serves as the foundation of our training programs, and is featured in Dr. Greenwald's recent books: Child Trauma Handbook, EMDR Within a Phase Model of Trauma-Informed Treatment, Treating Problem Behaviors, Progressive Counting, and the comic book, A Fairy Tale. The Fairy Tale Model represents an adaptation of proven-effective methods to real-world situations, and provides a systematic guide to every step of treatment.
This 1-day workshop offers advanced clinical skills for trauma-informed evaluation, treatment planning/contracting, clinical supervision/consultation, and more. This is a hands-on clinical skills training for working with clients who have been exposed to significant trauma or loss. Participants should be mental health professionals (or grad students/interns) who provide and/or supervise psychotherapy. Full documentation on the course here.
The program will cover:
- Introduction to trauma and post-traumatic stress.
- Trauma’s contribution to reactivity and symptoms/problem behaviors.
- Analyzing presenting symptoms/problem behaviors from a trauma perspective.
- Overview of trauma treatment and phases of treatment.
- Trauma-informed case formulation - explaining it to the client/family.
- Enhancing motivation and commitment to treatment goals.
- Treatment planning and contracting.
- Trauma resolution (including a brief experience with PC)
- Applying the model to challenging cases
- Using the model for supervision and case consultation
Participants will be able to:
- Explain to clients how past trauma or loss can lead to ongoing problem behaviors or symptoms.
- Develop a systematic and comprehensive trauma-informed treatment plan.
- Problem-solve their own (or their supervisees') challenging cases using the trauma-informed treatment perspective.
The training program involves lecture, demonstration, and in-class practice. This is an experiential training, and part of the learning is to practice the interventions with other participants. Although participants are always in charge of what they disclose, some individuals have reported that their participation led to facing personal issues.
